    You missed the one big difference between 1959 and 2014 movies: In the former, Maleficent curses Aurora to death, in this one, to sleep.

      It's "Die!" vs "sleep like death!" Which as roles, etc. were adjusted around it's not surprising. In Sleeping Beauty Merryweather changes the curse. In Maleficent the fairies were not quite so competent. And as they were leaving the heroics to Maleficent they fitted her with reluctance.
