Disney Film Project Podcast - Episode 76 - Secretariat

This week the DFPP team heads to the track to catch a glimpse of the most amazing race horse that ever lived, but what they discover is that behind every great horse there is a great owner in the 2010 drama Secretariat.

  1. Just listened to this podcast and you missed a few things, especially in facts about the actual horse. Big Red wasn't the last unbeaten horse to win the Triple Crown. There were two after him, Seattle Slew (who, unlike Big Red, was actually unbeaten through the Belmont stakes. Big red had lost before then) and Affirmed. Yes those two came after but Seattle Slew actually had the better race record going into the Derby.

Just an FYI, Penny has known the Hancocks before the funeral. The Hancocks were (and are) a huge breeding name in the Thoroughbred world. So he would be well known to the Chenery family before the funeral. And to add to Todd's comment, the Hancocks' could have a whole movie made about them too (How they survived while Calumet didn't is just fantastic)

Bill Nack was also in the film ;)

another just an FYI, horses aren't related if they're only related by sire. They're only considered related if by maternal lines ;) So any horse in the movie isn't really related to each other unless they have the Mother in common.

And here's a bit of trivia on Big red as a sire... he sucked in terms of the foals racing. However, as a broodmare sire he was amazing (so foals out of his daughters). In fact he was for a while thought to be infertile and his first foal was actually an appendix appaloosa (half appaloosa half thoroughbred) named First Secretary (http://ilovehorses.net/blog/history-2/secretariats-first-foal-had-spots/)
